6100 b.c
beginning of the Neolithic period with the first
cultures of cereals and breeding.
2700
b.c
foundation of the minoan civilization by king Minos (son of Zeus in
mythology), during which the trade, the writing and all the forms of art are
developed.
2000
b.c
appearance of the 4 large palates Knossos, Malia, Zakros and Phaïstos.
1750
b.c
destruction of these palates by a tsunami.
Apogee of the minoan civilization with the construction of other palates.
1450
b.c
end of the minoan civilization with the arrival
of the Myceniens, followed by the Doriens towards
1100 front J-C, then the Ptolemees in
323 b.c and the Romans in 67 b.c.
59 a.c
begins Christianity; then many invasions of the island during
11 centuries by the Byzantines, the Arabs and the Venetians.
In 1541
birth of the painter El Greco in the small village of Fodele (30kms of Heraklion)
In 1669
invasion of the island by the Turks; the
island trades with France 5 years later (following agreements established
between the two countries).
In 1866
rebellion of the inhabitants of Crete against the Othomans in the monastery of Arkadi.
1000 of them will be killed by the Turkish army.
In 1898
autonomy of Grece; the island will be attached to the monarchical Greece
(independent since 1827), in 1913
In 1975
after having known the German and Italian occupation during the second world war
and the dictatorship of the “colonels” in 1967,
monarchy is abolished and the Republic restaured.
