Island of Crete above |
Crete enjoys a good geographical situation at equal distance from Europe, Asia and Africa. This is the largest island of Greece and the fifth by its size in the Mediterranean.
High mountains cross the island from the west to the east; the white Mountains, the Ida mount in the center (highest peak 2450m) with snow during the winter, the mountains of Sitia in the south and the Dikti mount in the east. Thanks to these mountains, Crete enjoys a large variety of landscapes: fertile plains such as Lassithi, Omalos and nidha, enigmatic caves Diktaion and Idaion where would have been born ZEUS, and canyons such as the canyon of Samaria, declared natural reserve. Crete is divided into four prefectures: Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Aghios Nickolaos. Its maintown is Heraklion with nearly 140.000 inhabitants for an insular population estimated at 540.000 inhabitants with a surface of 8300km ² (260kms in length and 63kms in breadth). CLIMATE
